Sean Hardy

En tant que fondateur et directeur artistique de Summertide, Sean Hardy est originaire de New York où il a commencé sa formation théâtrale à l'École des arts du spectacle (Théâtre musical) et à l'École des arts de la scène Fiorello H. LaGuardia (Drame). Ensuite il a intégré Harvard College où il a reçu une license en neurobiologie - Mind, Brain & Behaviour avec un domaine secondaire en théâtre, danse et médias. Avec un intérêt défini pour la science et le théâtre, il a contribué à fonder et diriger Science-Theater @ Harvard College, en tant que directeur de deux de ses productions inaugurales; Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet défend sa vie ce soir et Silent Sky, tous deux écrits par la dramaturge Lauren Gunderson.

 

Poursuivant sa passion pour la fusion des sciences et des arts, Sean a déménagé à Paris en tant que récipiendaire de la bourse d'échange Harvard-ENS pour étudier les représentations de la mémoire traumatisée dans le théâtre français contemporain. Il poursuit actuellement sa maîtrise en neurosciences par l'intermédiaire de l'Université PSL Research à l'École Normale Supérieure d'Ulm. Il a notamment mené des recherches sur la représentation des femmes noires dans les espaces publics du théâtre français, et a produit un mémoire de Master sur le théâtre écologique (intitulé "La terre brûle et que faisons-nous (ou ne faisons-nous pas) pour en parler"). En tant que tel, son travail est souvent situé dans un contexte politique, et il soutiendra (et vous pouvez parier qu'il soutiendra bien cela !), que tout travail est politiquement situé. Lors de son séjour à Paris 8, il a eu l'occasion de découvrir les méthodes de recherche fondées sur la pratique dans les études théâtrales, un domaine qui a trouvé un écho dans son propre travail de chercheur et de metteur en scène. Il a donc poursuivi un post-master en Practice-Based-Research avec l'EUR ArTeC. Grâce à l'ArTeC, il a préparé ses futurs travaux universitaires au niveau du doctorat, qui porteront sur le rôle cognitif de la présence sur la réponse émotionnelle aux performances en direct (slogan "Zoom Théâtre - S'agit-il veritablement du théâtre ?"). Il n'est pas encore parvenu à une conclusion sur Zoom Theatre, mais il soupçonne que le temps qu'il a passé enfermé dans son studio en raison de COVID19 sera un élément essentiel pour l'aider à organiser ses idées sur la question.

 

Artistiquement, Sean cherche à combiner sa formation en théâtre musical et en spectacle de cabaret typiquement américain avec des questions percutantes sur la race, le genre et la sexualité dans mes spectacles. Comment pouvons-nous penser aux formes classiques de spectacle (c'est-à-dire burlesques) et problématiser et interroger les luttes de pouvoir entre les genres dont elles sont imprégnées ?

 

En dehors de ses activités dirigeantes, Sean a suivi une formation de danseur pendant dix ans (tap, swing, ballet, jazz, soie aérienne) et a étudié le piano et la voix classique. Il parle couramment le français et l'anglais et étudie actuellement le japonais et le coréen. Son amour des langues et de l'éducation l'a amené à obtenir son CELTA à travers l'Université de Cambridge.

As the founder and Artistic Director of Summertide, Sean Hardy hails from New York City where he started his theatrical training at the Professional Performing Arts School in Musical Theater and Fiorello H. LaGuardia School of the Performing Arts in Drama. He went to attend Harvard College where he received a BA in Neurobiology - Mind, Brain & Behavior with a secondary field in Theatre, Dance & Media. With a defined interest in science and theatre, he went on to help found and run Science-Theatre @ Harvard College, serving as the director for two of its inaugural productions; Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight and Silent Sky, both written by playwright Lauren Gunderson. 

 

Continuing his passion for fusing the sciences and arts, Sean moved to Paris as the recipient of the Harvard-ENS Exchange Fellowship to study the representations of traumatized memory in contemporary French theatre. He then completed a Masters degree in Neurosciences at the PSL Research University at the École Normale Supérieure Ulm as well as a second Masters in Theatre Studies at Paris 8 University. Specifically, he has conducted research on the representation of black women in French public theatre spaces, and produced a Masters thesis on ecological theatre (titled “The Earth is Burning and What Are We Doing (or Not Doing) To Talk About It”). As such, his work is often situated in a political context, and he will argue (and you can bet he will argue for this!), that all work is politically situated. During his time at Paris 8 he had the opportunity to discover Practice-Based-Research methods in theatre studies, a field that echoed with his own work as a researcher and director. He thus pursued a post-Masters diploma in Practice-Based-Research with the EUR ArTeC. Through ArTeC, he prepared his future academic work at the doctorate level, which will investigate the cognitive role of presence on emotional response to live performances (byline “Zoom Theatre - Is It Really Theatre?”). He has yet to come to a conclusion about Zoom Theatre, but he suspects that the amount of time he's been locked down in his studio apartment due to COVID19 will be a critical component in helping him organize his ideas on the matter.

Artistically, Sean seeks to combine his training in musical theatre and typical American showman/cabaret spectacle with hard hitting questions on race, gender and sexuality in my performances. How can we think about classical forms of performance (i.e. burlesque) and problematize and interrogate the  gendered power dynamics with which they are infused?

 

Outside of his directing endeavors, Sean has trained as a dancer for ten years (tap, swing, ballet, jazz, aerial silks) and has studied piano and classical voice. He speaks French and English fluently , and is currently studying Japanese and Korean. His love of languages and education led him to obtain his CELTA through Cambridge University.
